More than 108 people registered for the 1st Official Bike to Work Day in Winter Park, which was held on March 12. Due to a forecast of rain and lightning, the event was pushed back one day. Even so, nearly 70 showed up ready to ride!
Professors from Rollins College, students from Valencia College, and employees from Bonnier Corporation, the Winter Park Public Library, Keller Williams and many more joined together for a scenic 5-mile ride through neighborhoods in Winter Park.
As the City of Winter Park and partners like Healthy Central Florida work to promote cycyling as a healthy, safe, green alternative mode of transportation, rides like this one are great ways to encourage people to try it out.
The group ride was followed by a healthy, happy hour at Boca on Park Avenue. Riders traded stories, tips and routes they use to get to workplaces as far away as International Drive (seriously) to the more commonly cited downtown Orlando.
The event was so successful and fun that it had people buzzing about the possibility of promoting a similar ride monthly. Much like “Walk n’ Roll Wednesdays” at area schools, Healthy Central Florida and Winter Park’s Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee will be discussing promotion of a standing Bike To Work Wednesday (or Friday). Stay tuned – and let us know what you think!
