What gets written about and covered in the press often generates discussions around the water cooler and the kitchen table.  That’s good news for everyone who cares about health and creating healthy communities.  We’re pleased that many of our events, partners and key causes are getting media attention.  Make sure you join the conversation and comment on stories, write a letter to the editor or share news about health with us.

$27,500 in Health Innovation Grants announced

Healthy Central Florida awarded $27,500 to 12 outstanding projects in its fourth annual round of Health Innovation grants. To date, more than $100,000 has been distributed to help make our communities the healthiest in the nation. From a community workshop in May with two national thought leaders and nearly 160 attendees, 38 grant applications were submitted. This year the grants focused on two of Healthy Central Florida’s four focus areas: (1) Get Active – physical activity promotion (primarily walking and walkability); and (2) Eat Healthy – healthy food access and consumption.

Take a walk on the mild side for health, community

Our sedentary lives are killing us — literally. One in two U.S. adults is living with a chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer. And 70 percent of Americans will die prematurely due to diseases that could be prevented with simple lifestyle changes — like walking.
